Chadek (chadèque )
Mango, bananas, passion fruit to name a few, fruits are an integral part of Haitian cuisine. A fruit greatly cultivated and appreciated in the islands of the West Indies is the white grapefruit, also called chadèque (chadek in Haitian Creole).
This fruit, which grows naturally throughout Haiti, is distinguished by its thick yellow peel, its elongated shape and its unique half-sweet, half-tangy taste between orange and grapefruit that we know in Quebec.
In Haiti, chadek is mainly consumed in two well-known forms: the juice is extracted and added sugar to make a delicious and sweet beverage. With the peel and/or flesh, delicious jams are made with the addition of typical spices of the country (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg) that are eaten with a piece of bread or cassava (local bread made of grated cassava).
A pure delight one of a kind. For my part, the jam of chadek is my favorite and it is with pleasure that I share with you this delicacy, typical of Haitian cuisine that I have customized for you!.
Use it on your favorite toasts !
